2026 NIPA 2026

Reconstructed Reveries

Xinya XuChina

JURY CHOICE

AI

Entry type: Single

Inspired by Freud's infantile amnesia, our inability to recall life's earliest moments, I draw on my mother's diary of my life before age two and use generative AI to reconstruct the mysterious void of pre-verbal childhood. Like memory, AI spins countless variations of one event, fluid, never twice the same, real yet illusory, evoking a memory before memory. It asks how, and what, we remember.
